Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of participating.
"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not only his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.
Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.
Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
