Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these drugs must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural management.
