Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
